Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu →
Perched on the edge of a dramatic ravine in the mountains of Gipuzkoa, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu is a masterpiece of 20th-century avant-garde sacred art in Spain. Originating from a legendary 15th-century Marian apparition among thorns, the present complex was reborn in the 1950s through the bold vision of Franciscan friars and visionary architects Sáenz de Oíza and Luis Laorga. Its striking diamond-pointed stone façade, guarded by Jorge Oteiza's expressive apostles and featuring Lucio Muñoz's magnificent altarpiece, defies weight and seamlessly embraces the rugged spirit of the Basque wilderness.
