Sanctuary of Loyola →
Framed by the green hills of the Urola Valley in Azpeitia, the Sanctuary of Loyola stands as one of the most dazzling Baroque complexes in Europe. This monumental architectural group was erected around the medieval tower house where Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, was born in 1491. Crowned by an imposing pantheon-like dome over 65 meters high and designed by Italian master Carlo Fontana, the sanctuary mesmerizes with polished marbles, lavish Churrigueresque decoration, and an overwhelming spiritual atmosphere combining Basque restraint with the aesthetic grandeur of Roman Baroque.
